What is the difference between gold tone, gold plated, gold filled, vermeil jewelry items?

Gold color /gold tone/ – a metal coated with gold color composition but has no real gold content as in measurable in karats or value.

Gold plated – a non-precious base metal with a very thin layer of gold. The gold layer in gold plated jewelry is typically much thinner than the gold in gold filled jewelry.

Gold filled – is also known as “rolled gold” or “rolled gold plate”. Solid layer of gold is bonded with heat and pressure to a base metal. The thickness of the gold layer is at least 1/10 (if 10Kt gold is used) to 1/20 (if 14Kt gold is used) of the item’s total weight. Gold filled items are mark with fractions that show the amount of gold as proportion to base metal.

Vermeil – a sterling silver base coated or plated with gold.
